WESTMINSTER COLLEGE
McKelvey Campus Center
New Wilmington PA
A dramatic renovation and rebirth of two existing
campus structures in the Spring of 2003 as the
Andrew J. McKelvey
Campus Center opened on
the campus of Westminster College.
The 150-year old liberal arts institution recognized
the
advantages of systematic integration of new
digital media
technologies into both learning
environment and "the family
room" of the campus home. Taking advantage of how it
creates competitive, educational, and operational advantages,
the renovation & expansion of this multi-function facility
houses classrooms and multipurpose rooms, interactive theatre/lecture hall with video-conferencing technology,
grand ballroom and cybercafe.
Westminster sought a visionary development of "Smart Classroom" and "Media
Delivery System" projects as a strategic opportunity to inject new technologies,
functions, and processes across campus to encourage student and teacher interest
and participation. The College envisioned and initiated a paradigm shift from instructor-centered education
to student-centered learning.
Both projects were based on a model developed for technology
integration that facilitates instructional outcomes. Specific concepts for smart
multimedia-ready classrooms were designed to integrate computer-assisted presentation
technology and to support data and video communications. A campus-wide strategic plan
was also created to provide a framework to direct the long-term technology initiatives
of the college.
