UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA SAN DIEGO
Institute For Telecommunications and
Information Technologies -- CAL-(IT)2
San Diego CA
The new California Institute for
Telecommunications and Information
Technologies "[Cal-(IT)2]" at the
University of California, San Diego
functions
as a state-of-the-art
research facility focused on technology
and advanced research methodologies.
The project features a host of cutting-edge, technology-enabled research and conferencing spaces, including
a six-sided immersive virtual environment, a black box theater, and a 200-seat technology-intensive theater.
Several conference rooms enable previously unheard-of scientific visualization, enabling interdisciplinary
activities within the facility as well as global collaboration. Many applications required custom software,
custom-design, and custom integration. In order to meet the user-established needs, creation of these
leading-edge facilities required a commitment to unconventional and highly advanced technologies, some of
which have yet to be created.
The technology program supports current research requirements, yet is extremely flexible to adapt to future
applications. Key among those requirements was the development of a high-speed network infrastructure capable
of supporting voice, data and video, and the intelligent integration of both network and multimedia technologies
into conferencing and laboratory settings.
