CARNEGIE MELLON UNIVERSITY
Alumni Hall
Pittsburgh PA
Originally built by Andrew Carnegie as an art gallery, CMU's Alumni Hall
was plagued with acoustical problems. The solution required striking a delicate
balance between modern acoustic design and honoring the room's historic heritage.
Sound-dispersing maple shells complement the restored hardwood floors, while a
skylight constructed of lexan pyramids retains original room day lighting and
eliminates harsh echoes. The new stage floor features a herringbone pattern
that matches the original floor pattern.
In 2003, Alumni Hall received the Historic Preservation Award from the City of Pittsburgh's
Historic Review Commission.
