THE BIODESIGN INSTITUTE
Arizona State University
Tempe AZ
Recognized by R&D Magazine as
2006 Laboratory of the Year.
The Biodesign Institute at Arizona State
University is a multi-disciplinary
research and education initiative with
an eye on the future. The largest
investment in biotech research facilities
in state history, AzBio is designed
to integrate research in systems
biology and neurobiology with advances in computing, optoelectronics,
biomimetic materials and directed molecular assembly at mesonanoscale. The central theme linking these diverse fields is
comprehension of the principles that regulate molecular assembly in the formation of structural and functional
architectures in biological systems. How these design rules can inspire new applications in medicine, agriculture,
environmental management and national security is the payoff.
The Sextant Group provided project definition, technology programming, cost estimates,
audiovisual systems design, lighting systems design for this two-building 347,000 SF complex totaling $147.5M that include
high tech laboratories, core support facilities and office space. Bridging industry, government and academia,
AZ Bio is organized around “colab” space to spatially reinforce environment of collaboration and rapid reconfiguration.
