For over 30 years, Norman Russell has built Norman Russell Design into an industry leader in specialty lighting and control. Now a principal at The Sextant Group, he has contributed planning and construction supervision services on a wide variety of performance spaces and has provided expertise and creativity necessary for successful completion of hundreds of projects. Norman's background includes advanced academic degrees, five years of college and university lecturing, plus extensive hands-on experience working with manufacturers and suppliers of performance systems and equipment and over twenty five years of production experience in theatre, broadcast television, video and film production.

Russell's expertise lies in the depth and the breadth of his experience over all categories of performance spaces. He has consistently demonstrated creativity in transposing concepts and techniques from one type of venue to another, and effective application of emerging technologies. In addition to planning and design for new construction, Norman has had a wide range of experience in adaptive reuse of existing facilities as performance spaces, and upgrading systems and equipment in facility renovations.

Norman has worked on projects for hundreds of clients, including ESPN, the NFL Network, ABC, NBC, Fox, Paramount Pictures, Coca Cola, H.J. Heinz, University of California – Santa Barbara, Princeton University, United States Military Academy at West Point, and Caesar’s Palace.

In 2010, Norman Russell Design became part of The Sextant Group of companies. Forged from a 3-decade collaborative relationship with President Mark S. Valenti, the addition of Norman Russell Design to The Sextant Group of companies was a natural progression. He is accredited as Lighting Certified (LC) by the NCQLP, the National Council on Qualifications for the Lighting Professions. Norman heads the Santa Barbara office.
